Just to clear the air - XML is incredibly relational. Where is the relating key (say link) you ask? It is built-in via parentage which is detailed by what's called an XSD (XML Schema Definition). Think of an XSD as being the DDS used to define multiple files.
However, if all your data was described and stored using XML, you wouldn't
have a relational data base. Believe it or not XML databases exist. There are some cool "different" databases out there that are coming about. I saw an OO minded database article on CNET I think that was fun to read about. It will be even more interesting to see what, if any, of their features make it into some of the bigger DB's.
