Yup.... a .50 cal round does a great job of putting a hurt on a set of
platters...

Also, if it's REALLY that sensitive, break out your tool box, take out
the
DASD, take it appart, take your screwdriver or an old nail and do a few
etch streaks accros the platter, then give it to your kids to play
frizbee
with...:)

Yeah, but for smaller shops you're going to spend more on that machine

Besides, it doesn't hurt to have friends who like to hang out at the
rifle
range.

http://www.deadondemand.com/products/digitalshredder/ is a little more
gentle than the rifle range (the drives can be re-used). And it is
DoD-compliant.

Sufficient for me? Yes.
Sufficient for DOD? No.
Click on the link at the bottom of the link you sent us:

You could try the boot from CD or tape method. Then follow it up with
a
few good old boys and a rifle range.

Erasing DASD-decommission an AS400

This IBM document says to IPL off of a SavSys21 tape to initialize DASD
on an AS400 prior to decommissioning a system.

I am familiar with DOD specs of writing random strings of data in 7-9
passes to disks to really "delete" the data. Alternately there are
system (PC based of course) that write strings of zeros to data areas.

Anyone know if just initializing the disks and adding them to an ASP
will be sufficient?

Jerry
