Nathan, The problem is it's not 'my software'. It's a 3rd party app that we've already gone in to production with. The decision was made many years ago to buy where possible and write when necessary. While still I believe that is the right decision I acknowledge it doesn't come without compromise. Part of that compromise is spending on hardware some of what we saved on software development. Anyway, on a 570, the cost to activate a single CPU, activate i5/OS for that CPU, and to add enough RAM so that single CPU can stay busy adds up to nearly 6 figures. When you're talking about moving from a 2-way to essentially a 7-way (long-term) that is an awful lot of cash to spend even if you don't need a RAM bump with each activation. So while I don't doubt what you're saying at all, for us it (unfortunately) doesn't matter. What matters is getting sufficient WebSphere App Server performance and reliability at the most reasonable cost. John A. Jones, CISSP Americas Information Security Officer Jones Lang LaSalle, Inc. Another way to look at the problem, is the cost of inefficient architecture, which is my primary motivation for using the native virtual machine, languages, and interfaces, as opposed to distributed architectures like J2EE and .Net. A number of my colleagues develop somewhat comparable Web applications under J2EE, but the performance difference is something like 10 to 1, against. In other words, the ILE versions of our Web applications consume about 1/10 of the amount of CPU, as their J2EE counterparts. Since this thread is about saving the System i, one way to do that is to use native interfaces, because of the performance advantages over comparable applications running under distributed architectures. Someone may say they can get 5 Wintel or Lintel servers for the cost of a single CPU System i, but I can respond, saying no problem, my software is 10 times more efficient than yours.
