the ITJungle report that says nothing new planned for the i5 in 2007: http://www.itjungle.com/tfh/tfh112706-story01.html "...The latest rumor running around the System i community, which has not in any way been substantiated by IBM, is that the next round of i5/OS software and System i hardware announcements will be pushed to 2008. IBM executives have been prepping the System i community to expect the Power6 processors first in the System p AIX-Linux server line, but having no substantial announcements in the System i line would be unprecedented. And it is also a bad idea for the i5/OS and OS/400 ecosystem. ..." AMD says it will have a pure quad core processor by mid 2007. The next step is to have dual, then quad sockets of quad core processors on the server board. That means by December 2007 the single and fractional core i5 is competing against sub $10K servers that have 4, 8 and 16 cores. Yeah, if we would only call the system by its new name! -Steve
