Hi, Jerry: Your analogy is a good one, but doesn't lead to the conclusion you suggest. We are natives of America if we are born in America. (That matches both the etymology and the usage of the word.) *nix utilities were not "born" in i5/OS/400, so they are not "native". That being said, I think the distinction is useful only in that it serves as a warning that things may not work as expected. It is not -- necessarily -- a value judgement. One cannot say that a "native American" (in any sense of the phrase) is any better than an immigrant, although a rational person will have some expectations of one group that are not necessarily true of the other. And that leads us right back to the difference between "native" and "non-native" utilities in i5/OS/400.
