You can use the QUSLSPL api to quickly get the number of spooled files
in an outq...

Count the number of spool files in the queue.  If it passes a certain
number, send emails internal and external.  Put it in the scheduler and
run it every x minutes.  We do this all the time.

Your monitor program could PING the printer to see if it is still
active.

  About all I could think of was to monitor for any spool file in a SND
  status for an inordinate amount of time. Or, x number of spool files
  in
  RDY state in that output queue. Any other suggestions? (Now if I
  could
  only get our monitoring software to handle one of those.)
