Doug,

You didn't miss anything.  That's the way DSPJRN works.

You need a utility to DSPJRN to a properly formatted outfile then query
the file.

You could roll your own, or download/buy one.

We use Prodata's DBU utility here.  It includes a DBUJRN command that
does what is outlined above.

I am trying to monitor the changes made to a particular file, 
so I set up journaling on it. This part seems to be working 
fine. However I am running into difficulties when I try to 
work with the information captured in the journal receivers. 
Some of the fields in this file are packed numeric fields and 
these aren't shown properly when I do a DSPJRN (it doesn't 
matter whether its to an output file or a spool file or to my 
display).

Do I have any options here?
Did I miss something when I set up the journaling that would 
take care of this?
