ifs wrklnk error

V5R3 error. WRKLNK and option 5 to display returns error below. 
Directory has 27,000 (approx) entries. Last week at 25,000 (approx) entries it 
worked fine. 
These are small pdf files, about 7k each. Total dir size should not be a 
problem.
This is directory size right now:
Size of object data in bytes . . . . . :   12099584

Directory format . . . . . . . . . . . :   *TYPE2   

In addition, using an rpgle with some of Scott Klement's sample code to read 
the directory list to find new files. This pgm failing also, but no halt or msg 
seen 
lstat,opendir,readdir,closedir.
