Not near an iSeries rightnow but you could look at the capability in iSeries
Navigator to create a package definition (I think it's called) in Management
Central. If that works for you it can  be scheduled too.

Out of curiosity, what happens to the save files after they are created?

I create save files of all of our production libraries every night and
push them to our backup i5 where they are both stored until the next
night, and backed up to tape.
