IBM was showing at Minneapolis Common Expo a "possible" alternative,
a HMC like hardware device (no pc needed) ethernet attached but only of
hmc functions. A dedicated console not requiring windoze. Reminded me of
a thin client. I liked it.
Small shops do not want to dedicate a pc, and even if they do, as soon as you
leave they move it somewhere else...., plus like every pc in the network -
Win Updates, antivirus, and all other maintenance issues. Not sure how this
device get's it's updates.

Not bad compared to the several twinax terminals we had to have laying
around to support all the terminals going belly up. And I'd hate to see
the space used up in a machine room with 24 twinax terminals that could be
replaced with 1 hmc. Unless one has a fondness for the NASA look.

Good point too. We have an 890 with 24 partitions using Ops Console.
We have to always have a spare PC or two around, as the PC's tend to die
after a while.

Besides the fact that they almost never, ever break?

I completely agree. HMC is better in many ways even for a single i5
shop. Add in multiples and it's better yet.

You will need to use a WinDOHs based PC if you want to use graphical
disk management but that's small potatoes and no reason to select LAN
console in this environment.

Some clod suggested Twinax. I gotta find that guy and smack him. :-)
IMHO there is no justifiable reason to ever use a twinax console
again.
Ever.
