I would think compiler (such as RPG, C.....) would need to eventually generate machine instructions that require an expert on a particular machine to be able to understand what to do with it. ==> Is it even possible to do open source on this?
There have been many successful open source compilers or interpreters. The GNU C compiler (GCC) for example has been extremely successful. PHP, Perl and Python are examples of programming languages that (although, not compiled) are very successful and entirely open-source.
Not to mention that, if you think a compiler requires low-level knowledge, consider what's involved in an operating system! Coding all of the driver software for every bit of hardware... Compilers typically only need to call routines in the operating system's API.
Yet, we have a plethora of successful open source operating systems. Linux, of course, and open source BSD dervatives (MacOS X, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD) are wildly popular and successful.
