This is really a great way to go. You can make backups of the whole system very quickly just by copying the storage space. So when you apply SP3 to Exchange and it crashes, you can immediately start up the version without SP2. The mailbox recovery issue is the same, regardless of what hardware you are running on. It is always a tricky affair. Easy if you have the resources and the practice, a nightmare any other way.

BRMS even has a policy which ends the server, backs up the 'Exchange blob' and starts the server back up. Takes about 25 minutes for a 30 GB system (LTO2 tape drive).
