We run Small Business Server (which includes Exchange) on an integrated server and have no problems. We also use GFI Mail Essentials (great product, BTW) with Exchange on SBS.

I hope to gain performance and consolidate the backup.  However, it seems to
me that if I have to recover anything in Exchange I may be limited to
restoring all or nothing.
