Hate to say it but it's not Exchange but your back up process. We do 2
backups, brick level and individual mail boxes. We use Veritas for our
network backup. The exchange data base is a single file and backing up
that file is brick level. To backup individual mail boxes would be like
backing up individual groups of records from ANY data base file. First
you must extract them to a temporary place, then back up that temporary
place. Brick level goes to tape here and we keep 7 days of the
individual items on a separate server.

So again I have to defend Exchange to say it is the backup routine used,
not Exchange that is poor. (Exchange does offer a way to backup
individual mail boxes / items to your backup software if it takes
advantage is a different story.)

I'm not either, nor do I have anything to do with our exchange server.

I just knew that the Exchange Server Agent existed.

So what you're saying is that it's basically impossible to restore a
single mailbox or a single piece of mail from in an Exchange Server.

Nice, never realized what a poor product Exchange Server was.

What's the big deal? You restore the order files into a temporary
library and copy the needed records back into the production files.

Not something I have to do every day, but certainly a capability that I
couldn't live without.
