Performance when using POI to create an excel workbook.

Greetings List,
Using POI, I am able to create an excel workbook from my RPG program
that looks exactly as I want it to. The problem is that it is taking up
to 30 minutes to create the workbook. Is there any way to speed up the
creation process? I am reading a file with 3800 records and creating a
workbook with 14 named sheets (one for each division) on a 720 at V5R3.
