As a side question Scott, how would you go about creating an Excel sheet
that did not use Java?

In my experience (and I know I'm going to get flak for saying this) 
anytime Java is involved, this is the sort of performance you get.

Obviously, a hardware upgrade would help make things faster.  Not sure 
what else would help...
