They can't handle two events a year, so to their thinking the logical move
is to have MORE than two.
I disagree. COMMON does very well running two conferences a year. What most people, even those attending the conferences, don't know is that the educational content is almost totally voluntary. The IBM speakers are, probably, paid their normal salary while making presentations, as are some non-IBM speakers. Even then organizing and planning the content of a conference pre-dates the sessions by 6-12 months on the part of the CET and others.

COMMON differs from other conferences, such as the IBM Tech, in that it tries to provide a wider range of content. Because of that trying to cram everything I want to see and hear has always been an impossibility. It is not "focused" in the same way that a smaller conference or seminar might be focused on, say, ILE RPG or systems management. For that reason, perhaps, it isn't possible to always deliver the depth that one would like to see on a particular subject.

To me, this just dilutes the regional events and positions COMMON to compete
directly with the LUGs, to the detriment of all.
This will depend upon many factors. OMNI, I would guess, has a different point of view than, say, Nashville does. Unlike OMNI we will usually stage a one-day seminar each year on a particular subject with, usually, one speaker. If COMMON wants to partner with us in a way that would be beneficial to both of us, we would probably jump at the chance. I can see why the larger LUG's might feel stepped on, but the second/third tier LUG's would probably be willing to give it a try. I may be missing something, Joe, but I don't see how a "regional" conference in Nashville or Albuquerque would be a detriment to the large LUG's.

Joe
