They shouldn't be dropped off the system.

I think the reason that they are being dropped off is that there being
auto-configured as a different type, the system thinks the "old" printer
was replaced by a "new" printer.

If auto-configure is off, you should be good.

The other option is to figure out what needs to be changed on the
printer so that it is correctly auto-configured that way the system
won't keep thinking that you've got a different printer there.

If you want to try that, please post type-model of the auto-configured
DEVD vs. what you actually want.  In addition to the manufacturer and
model of the printer and how the printer is connected.
