Grizzly - AFAIK, I've never seen this happen with IBM devices...I would suspect that (since you didn't specify) that these are non-IBM printers that can emulate several different IBM printer models, and that when the system is IPL'ed that the "signature" that it gets is for the basic printer model that it emulates
In my experience, this has been a common problem with non-IBM devices (printers and 5250-type displays).
In my client shops where this has occurred, I have typically seen the system administrator turn OFF Automatic Configuration once everything is initially configured properly, then from that point forward, either manually create new devices using the appropriate CRT* command or turning Automatic Configuration on just long enough to configure any newly-attached devices, then turning it back off.

*** Disclaimer: My knowledge of devices is pretty limited I have 2 printers that lose their device descriptions when our system is powered down. When the system comes back up they are created by auto configuration and don't work correctly. I can't figure out why only these 2 devices lose their configurations and no other devices seem to. I assume that when the system goes down the device descriptions are being deleted. I don't know how else they would be autoconfigured on start up. I don't see any device configuration going on in the start up unless the program QWCSWTRS handles device configurations. For the time being I have to delete the autoconfiged devices and recreate with the correct settings. Is there a way that I can prevent the devices from being lost or deleted when the system is powered down or a way that I can get the printers to configure correctly when the system comes back up without creating a program? Finally, if these printers were daisy chained could that be what is causing the initial problem of losing the devices? Thanks in advance. --This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing listTo post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
