It's really not that bad.  Knowing the hardware requirements is the 
biggest thing.  Things to think about is getting you tape drive and 
optical drive on their own IOP.  You can switch that really easy.  I 
use SST to do it but you can use OPS Nav as well.  
Other than that once you get an IOP and DASD controller dedicated it's 
not bad.  I used OPs Nav for that as well.

There is a LPAR validation utility that seems fairly easy to use.  
It's been a while since I've used it though.
