Worked for me. Thank you for the help, and I did not even ask for it.

I guess IBM is NOT going to update that client, nor the HMC telnet
server:

I emailed you the configuration for the iSeries Access emulator earlier.

Please let me know if that gets the direct connection working. If you
still get an error I'll help you get that resolved.

I've invested support for the os/400 telnet client.

My initial reply from os/400 telnet is this is not a defect. They
designed their 5250 client to talk only to another os/400 partition and
they use certain "shortcuts" not available to other emulators. They
will
not update the client.

Information center is specific that only the following emulators can be
used with the HMC 5250 proxy. os/400 telnet is not on the list.
"To connect to a 5250 console remotely, one of the following emulators
must be used:
- IBM(r) iSeries(tm) Access PC5250 emulator, Version 5, Release 3 with
PTF
SI13587 or later
- IBM Personal Communications 5250 emulator, Version 5.7 or later
-iSeries Access for Linux(r) emulator, Version 5.2.0-1.4 or later "

I cannot open a defect on the proxy as this is an unsupported
environment.
We are considering a doc apar on the telnet client. I will create a
support document on this error. I've informally passed this on to the
proxy developer and asked if it can be fixed in a future release. If
you
would like an "official" design change request submitted please let me
know. I'll need to call you and get some additional information
(impact,
justification, etc).
