I found out that the 5250 telnet client from an existing 5250 session, you
know, TELNET RMTSYS(HMC01) PORT(2300) does not currently work. Seems that
the HMC has a problem with the protocol from that telnet client. Turns
out that IBM believes that the telnet client follows the protocol (barely)
so they will update the HMC to work right with that client.

For the archives I then used my iSeries Access 5250 to go directly. Some
set up issues:
Communications, Configuration, System name: Use either the hmc dns name
(mine was hmc01) or it's IP address
Communications, Configuration, System name, Properties button: "Use
default user id, prompt as needed" User id=Q#HMC. Allows the hmc to use
that client and bypass iSeries Access for Windows 5250 licensing
requirements.
Communications, Configuration Port number: Use 2300
