Good points dude...

Now, here's paradigm shift that's needed. We NEED to stop talking/thinking in terms of HARDWARE and be thinking in terms of SOFTWARE and O/S...

One of the big reasons that Windows, linux, etc., are making inroads is that people generally don't care what or whos server it runs on . As long as the underlying chipset is compliant, the software should work.

I submit that this shift started just before Y2K really hit high gear shortly after Y2k.... It's the applications that sell...people ask about the hardware and O/S as secondary and perhaps tertiary concerns... But, if we're going to survive longer term, I think a standard name for the O/S needs to be determined and stuck with long term. And the O/S is what needs to be heavily marketed.

Don,

It is the people who are familiar with the platform who keep asking for AS/400 resources. It is from WITHIN that is causing the industry to think we are a bunch of backward operators! With the i5 and IBMs commitment to marketing, we are at a crossroads! If WE can change the way we think about our platform, then we CAN change the world. It will just take some getting over our stubborn inabilities to change!!

And, an AS/400 is NOT a S/38 or S/36 or S/34. So it needed a new name. And, the power5 technology is not an AS/400. So, there can be valid reasons for name changes. Sure, it is something that is hard to take, but we are here - so let us move forward and not live in the past!

Windows is an OS only - so we are talking oranges and pears here (no, no apples). Our platform includes hardware and OS and security and database and.... To get the equivalent, we would have to name things:
Compaq+Windows
HP+Windows
Dell+Windows
etc...
And, while the Windows name remains consistent, we did have 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP, 2003 and now Vista.

And POSTIVE NAME RECOGNITION is definitely a good thing. Now that IBM is marketing, and we know the AS/400 has not a positive reputation, WE should all be using the iSeries as a name - a POSITIVE NAME - so that the not-yet-faithful will have a chance to learn about this new and amazing technology!

Well, Trevor,

One thing I discovered when doing the research for the jobs article...people are still posting the vast majority of thier help wanted ads as jobs on a AS/400. Which is why I tell people to use BOTH AS400 and iSeries when doing a job search.

It's not just us biggots, it's the industry. Gee, ya think Microsoft changes the name of their O/S just because they come out with a new release? We've had S/36, S/34, S/38, AS/400, iSeries, eServer, i5.... And all the time M$ has just had WINDOWS... Regardless of what you think of the quality of their product, it DOES have what we lack and need - POSITIVE NAME RECOGNITION
