Yes - in the file APIs. Go to www.iseries.ibm.com/infocenter, take the V5R3 version, then click on the top link in the menu, then Programming, then APIs, then API Finder. Enter "member" in the "find by name" search field. Look for something about retrieving. Then find the shortest format that has the information you want.

I went through all that in order to suggest how you can find this kind of information easily. From the API link you can also open APIs by type, so you could take a look at all the File APIs if you wnat.
