Depending on the actions your program is set to perform you could check for the cable functionality by unplugging it or cutting utility power to your UPS and see if the system senses the change in state. Our programs are set to just notify us when utility power is lost/restored, not to begin any shutdown on their own. I ran into the situation you described when initially setting up the cable on one of our 520s, (we installed the original PTFs to enable the support for the UPS cable, but it wouldn't work until the cold start was done) but didn't know it was an ongoing potential problem. Good to know... You have to do a cold start to get it rerecognized. And there is no way, per IBM, for we the end users to check for that problem via the ASM, SST, or user program. It requires a CE. (Although I don't know if those of you with HMCs have a way to check it.) IBM is working on 1) a PTF to fix the problem, and 2) a way for the end user to check for proper UPS attachment. I do not know whether this affects any systems other than the 520. -- Jeff Crosby Dilgard Frozen Foods, Inc. P.O. Box 13369 Ft.
