I've been wrestling with that very issue. Trouble is, the all pervasive Internet Explorer has such abysmal support for printing that it's virtually impossible to do anything useful with CSS in that regard. Without IE of course, all else is moot. Regrettable, but true. I recently put an app in production and was forced to provide instructions to users that they had to manually switch to landscape mode before printing. How stupid is that?Yet it still suffers from what I've seen far too much of with HTML recently. I.e., printing it can cause the edges of the page to be cut off. Resizing the browser window doesn't adjust the display elements to fit in the new window dimensions.
