I've been wrestling with that very issue. Trouble is, the all pervasive Internet Explorer has such abysmal support for printing that it's virtually impossible to do anything useful with CSS in that regard. Without IE of course, all else is moot. Regrettable, but true. I recently put an app in production and was forced to provide instructions to users that they had to manually switch to landscape mode before printing. How stupid is that?
