Our production system we have scheduled to IPL after each weekly full system save. But is overkill. It was reasonable in the pre-7xx hardware days; maybe even further back. But since then there's been little true reason to. A big reason to IPL was reclaiming of temporary addresses (see WRKSYSSTS) but the temp address space is so large now I doubt any but the very largest of shops run in to issues. We're a couple of weeks from retiring the old production 730 in favor of a partition on a 570. Once on the 570 I plan to eliminate regular IPLs. Or DR/dev box we IPL as necessary .. Mostly for PTFs or if there's a maintenance item. So it was getting IPLed about 2-3 times a year. It is also about to turn into an LPARed 570 at which time the practice will continue .. IPL only as necessary.
