Ah, Rob, SMTP does indeed send mail. Look at your own post, "250 jamesl@xxxxxxxxxxx will forward" The SMTP server is saying that it's not the mail server for hb.quik.com, but that it will send the mail to the correct server for you. Even those you're using a TELNET client, by connecting to port 25 and by using SMTP commands, you're effectively using the SMTP protocol to send mail.
