With very little or no changes, many of the programs written for
> the System/3 could be run on the current box.



Assuming you had the source and could recompile them. Constrasted with
programs compiled 25 years ago for the S/38, where unless you intentionally
removed observability, will not only run on current RISC hardware, but does
so natively without having to go through a thunking layer or 16-bit
subsystem or anything. What is amazing on the 38/400 is how the hardware has
changed and even compiled programs continue to take advantage of the
hardware advances.
