A comment from a developer using VARPG.

The code is exactly the same as Iseries one, I can take the source of a
service program on Iseries, paste it in visual age, compile it and it's
working.

What make VARPG not comparable with VB is that the first is Event driven,
the second is more object oriented.

The second reason you cannot compare VARPG and VB (before .Net) is a matter
of budbget, I think Claus Weiss and the team in Toronto did many miracles to
keep all working with the money Ibm is investing on.

Just to clear up some points:

- the java version has too many limitations
- the subfile part is nice and complete and robust
- service programs are supported (shared DLL) with some limitations on
passing parameters (no PARM *VARSIZE)
- You cannot call service programs on Iseries (only via API, not simple)
- The data exchange and program to program communications between the client
and the server is really good, stable and fast.
- Good debug support
- No support for Xp style. VARPG applications running on Xp clients look
old.
- No tools to trace visual part generated with a reference on Iseries files
(it's all manual)
- Is not under WDSC umbrella, to edit the sources there is CODE editor (when
you get use to the new one looks really outdated)

Anyway I like it, we are currently developing with VARPG and I know a an ERP
application written with VARPG. I think the real deal is that now our server
side part of the application is client oriented so, if Ibm goes on dumping
VARPG, we will rewrite only the interface.
