If all you know is RPG, if your whole background is green screen RPG, then VARPG is a much shorter learning curve than Java or C. IBM has always had a career development path for technical people, and I believe VARPG was envisioned as being a way to get legacy shops to adopt GUI applications. One of the nice things, in my opinion, is that a VARPG application doesn't have to replace an existing application; it can augment it. If you already have a functioning Accounts Payable system and want to allow staff to review old A/P activity with a vendor, why not write a small VARPG application using existing files and data? There's no need for a new from-scratch application with downloaded files, just add to the existing framework.. --------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.martinvt.com --------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Date: 09/21/05 12:27:09 To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: Green screen to GUI I know the reason I never got into VARPG is that it's about as proprietary as can be. I mean, at least folks know BASIC, so if they wanted to program in VB (for whatever reason), you could find folks that could pick it up. But...if you're going to develop visual code, you may as well have a slightly steeper learning curve and use C or Java. After all, the RPG syntax isn't all that special... > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: RE: Green screen to GUI > From: "Booth Martin" <booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx> > Date: Wed, September 21, 2005 1:13 pm > To: "Midrange Systems Technical Discussion" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> > > hee hee...
