We had an 820 with 1100CPW and went to a 520 with 3300CPW. At the same
time we removed the old 720 migration tower and replaced with a 5094
expansion tower. Replaced 2 dasd controllers and 30 drives with 1 dasd
controller and 15 drives. These were the new 15k 35GB drives that
replaced 20 6717 and 10 6718 drives. The new controller has cache were
the two that were removed did not. We have seen a substantial increase
in performance. Oh Ya, we also went from 8GB to 16GB of RAM. What is
your current configuration RAM and DASD? What is your proposed system?
What does your data base, user, and workload growth look like for the
next 3 years? Are you 5250, Client/Server or WEB based applications?
Are you converting your applications from 5250 to other? These all need
to be considered on your decision. Do not forget cash flow as well.

We are currently running a model 820-2395 (370 cpw). Our batch
processing is taking too long (8 hours) and online response is slow at
times.
The debate is on (and must be finalized by Sept 30) on whether we
upgrade to a 520/0902/7459 (1,000cpw) or a 520/0903/7453 (2,400cpw). We
can buy a 2400cpw machine now and pay less (in totality) than what it
would cost to upgrade later from the 1000cpw machine. However, the
debate is:
- do we need the 2400cpw now? will it be overkill?
- will the cost to upgrade to the 2400cpw machine decrease by this time
next year?

If anyone has migrated from an 820 to a 520 and would like to share
their experiences, especially performance-wise, that would be helpful.
