You can toggle the STSMSG job attribute on and off using the CHGJOB command
(or applicable API)

I have a job which is run interactively which includes lots of file
copying to and from QTEMP. I would like to supress the (potentially
hundreds of) system-generated 'Copying member...' status messages from
appearing, but I would like to be able to send periodic status messages
of my own - 'Copying required files...' etc. Is this possible? I thought
of toggling the USROPT user profile parameter between *STSMSG and
*NOSTSMSG, but I don't know if it would work, and I'd like to know if
there is an alternative.
