The current news flying about on the net is that DDL created files do
data validation (such as on numeric fields) on the write, not on the
read.  The old-style DDS files do the checking on the read.  A very
carefully researched and written column on this very topic by Dan
Cruikshank (an IBM employee, as I understand it) appeared in a recent
iSeries Network issue.
