IIRC, the old version of SQL (CISC?) returned defaults instead of NULLs for missing values. This was changed to abide by the SQL standard, not an iSeries reason. The changeover caused us all manner of pain.

Don't count on IBM changing this - it is in the SQL standard, and IBM wants to fit in with the rest of the world here.

I've not yet found or seen a solution to missing fields in an outer join
other than the IFNULL and COALESE (spelling?) function.  I think it would
be a big help to have an option where the default value for the field is
returned, rather than NULL, which my standard RPG program don't handle too
well.  Maybe IBM will add it someday....
