Sounds like a bad Mimix implementation... we were an early adopter (around 10 years ago), and have been very happy with it over the years. It's a good product, but ANYTHING can be implemented badly. ;) "phil Kestenbaum" <pkestenbaum@xxxxxxxxx> 05/27/2005 11:12 AM To "Midrange Systems Technical Discussion" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> cc <rob@xxxxxxxxx> Subject RE: Help me Justify iSeries I used Mimix at one place. There was always a system programmer consultant having to mess w/ it, alot of out-of-synching all the time. Put on Itera and you're done. Actually we are doing a Rollover next weekend so I will know more then. But you should really check them out. -----Original Message----- From: rob@xxxxxxxxx [mailto:rob@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Friday, May 27, 2005 11:54 AM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: Help me Justify iSeries I'll forward this on. Have you used Mimix before? How often do you cut over to your DR box? I am the admin for it. Never have any issues. Biggest hassle is the frequent PTF's. Boss was dead set on Mimix HA lite. Lot cheaper than Mimix full blown. Then I strongly suggested that he look at iTera based on customer testimonials. After all, have you found one customer that left iTera for Mimix? No. But you can find lots going the other way. Boss opened his mind to that possibility. Then our BP did the full court press and brought in a friggin army. Now he's back to leaning strongly towards Mimix HA lite again. There's a reason they're called Business Partners. Often IBM has fire sales where you can buy an i5 at a deeply discounted price providing that you sign the "This machine is for DR purposes only" form. Talk to your software vendors. They should have a discount on the copy of the software on the DR box. Some don't even charge for it. http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/hardware/is4ha/ When we get a DR solution this year we plan on running on it every 8 weeks when we do our scheduled downtime on the other boxes. After all, we hotswitch to our domino backup sites on a daily basis. I think a lot of this decision would be so much easier if IBM would just buy or develop their own integrated DR solution. People would feel even more comfortable with IBM directly behind such an integral product. I'm a staunch supporter of the iSeries, however, my boss who came from a Microsoft environment seems to think its so much more expensive to stay on the iSeries due to hardware and software costs. How can I convince him that this where our business needs to be? Or, has the time come to give up the fight? BTW: the scale-tipping factor was the high cost of a backup machine for D-R purposes. We're looking at about $20K to buy a new low-end 520 with V5R3 and enough DASD to put in another location as a hot-site. The production machine is an Enterprise Class 520 that we purchased in Sept of last year. The total cost including all of our software licenses was around $200K. I hate to say it, but I think he may be right. I agree that iSeries is a stable and secure platfor that is highly capable of running our business, but unfortunately, they're only looking at the bottom line.
