Why hasn't anyone mentioned security? Larry mentioned (in another topic) about being able to crack Windows passwords. Wanna try that on an iSeries? Most of us don't have it set up thoroughly or correctly, but it's there. Not in MS.

The only time our i5's have been down is the IPL after PTF install.

And IBM makes mistakes (aka PTF's), but they're responsive. How long does it take MS to plug publicly known security breaches?

Security is built into the iSeries first. Everything else is built on top of that. At MS it's an afterthought - and requires a memo from the COB to even recognize it as an issue.

How can I convince [my boss]
that this is where our business needs to be?

Answer the following questions:

How many people does it take to administer the iSeries vs whatever
Wintel machines you have?

The iSeries hasn't been hit with any viruses (yet)...

The iSeries right out of the box can talk to almost any other machine
on the planet. At no additional charge in most cases!

How 'bout downtime? I hate to admit it, but Wintel servers are just
about as stable as the iSeries at our place.

How 'bout restoring backup tapes to the backup machine? On the
iSeries, you just have to have enough DASD to hold the data; it
doesn't care about a particular configuration. You can save a
library, and restore an object from that library. Can the Wintel
side say the same?

How much will you have to pay for an Oracle or SQLServer license to
supply the number of seats you'll need?
