We did this with an earlier model of AS/400 (a model 270 with an 800Mhz IPCS) It worked well but we didn't see an inherent advantage to having the "integration" of the IPCS. If you have apps that use something like MS Access or other apps that are moving a lot of data to/from the iSeries, the "integrated" approach is great because of the virtual lan connection between the x-server and iSeries is fast, otherwise, we didn't have a compelling reason to continue down that path.

However, as I understand it, the cross-management capabilities have improved.

We are looking at using VNC in the PASE environment to serve up X-Windows desktops that do just 5250 and web browsing. In that environment, everything runs on the iSeries with no other hardware required. Most X-Windows clients are supported.
