This whole mess is why I prefer to set up individual SST user profiles. That way you never disable QSECOFR by forgetting that it is uppercase, e.g. And you have the benefit that you can audit usage down to individuals, not to the global QSECOFR. (The auditing advantage applies to regular signon, as well. Should probably have no need to signon as QSECOFR, except for some special installation routines.)

BTW, you can set the passwords to a previously-used one inside of DST (maybe SST now). The rule against repeated passwords is not enforced in that interface. This way you can get back to what you had. This may or may not be a desired practice. YMMV

Ah, yes - this way will work too - I was going for the most intrusive
and annoying method. As a side note, I think this leaves an SRC on the
control panel until the next time you IPL. No biggie, doesn't affect
anything negatively, just be prepared for it.

Also - that would be a good time to create yourself a profile in the SST
user profile list with a known password that has user edit authorities -
that way you can edit passwords and re-enable even easier if it happens
again.

Here are some notes I have on the subject from running into this issue
and contacting IBM. (note: we have an 820 on v5r2--your milage may
differ) HTH.

Signed on as QSECOFR
type CHGDSTPWD F4
change the value of the parm to *default

- Make sure that Key stick is in (if any). - On front Panel you should have toggle buttons and in the middle an enter button. - Toggle Up to 02. - Press enter. - Press enter again to skip B - Toggle up or down to change N to M - Press enter ( that will take you back to 02) - Change 02 to 21 - Press enter - It will change to 2100 - On your console you should see DST sign on screen. - Sign on with ID QSECOFR password QSECOFR ( upper case) - after pressing enter it will force you to change it. - new password mu be between 6-8 characters long. - it can not be the last 18 passwords that were used.

once done, Put system back into normal mode by changing M to N.
