The HMC is an overpriced PC running a proprietary version of Linux. The
word open is never (truthfully) used.

You need an HMC is you have capacity upgrade on demand, or LPAR, otherwise
you don't need it. IBM recommends that you buy it, because it's very good
for their stock price to sell you anything overpriced.

It's very different, but you will get used to that after a year or so.

The rack mounted HMC has a Thinkpad keyboard. The desk mounted HMC has a
keyboard that came off of an alien spaceship from Mars that crash landed in
Austin, Texas (where the HMC is developed). We have a desk mounted HMC,
because we have a computer room without racks. I still swear at the
f@#$ing keyboard.

The HMC software (which we were told would never be refreshed) is now in
it's fifth (or so) release. From the requirements session at COMMON, it's
obvious that there will be more releases.

This was a product that was brought to market months before it was ready
for GA. IBM tried to emulate M$ by shipping it before it was ready.

Hi,

We're about to move into an i5 and I have some questions about the "HMC"
that are not (clearly) answered by the IBM documents I've been able to
find.
Yes, I've seen the HMC faq and my only question is: who "frequently" asked
these questions anyway?

I haven't made the jump to the PC-as-a-console (Operations Console),
there's
been no reason to and you just can't beat a twinax console for
dependability.

Is the "HMC" mandatory? i.e., do I still have SST and DST as always or do
these functions get replaced by the Hardware Management Console?

Just how much do I need to know about the HMC before I roll in an i5? I'll
be doing the migration, so if there's something I need to know, well, I
need
to know it. :-) Or, Can I just ignore all the stuff about the HMC and go
on
as always?

TIA
