We submit batch jobs to run at night that require saving files to tape. Occasionally, a session is left "hanging" out on the system even though there are no active users. This results in a system message that the file is active and the saves are halted until the session can be canceled. Is it possible to check the system prior to running nightly batch jobs and automatically cancel all sessions?

Yes. You have various options, the easiest of which is to just end the interactive subsystem prior to nightly processing.

The other thing we do is WRKSBSJOB on the interactive subsystem to an outfile. Then we read through the file and send a message to each user telling them to sign off. The program waits 5 minutes, submits itself again and ends each job that is still active. Oh, we also store the list of users and gently remind them to sign off before leaving ;)

It's really a matter of whether someone *could* still be active and if you want to alert them.
