I opened a Supportline PMR and got the following response:

Hi Jeff,                                                                
Unfortunately, the iSeries at this time, does not support Authentication
with SMTP. So you will not be able to route mail via your ISP, if they
require Authentication with SMTP.

Hope this answers your question. Thank you.

Since I'm not having problems with the current setup, I'll just leave it.
Other things need done.
