A couple of oblique comments:
1. My ISP recently switched from its home-grown "QuikCop"
server-side spam filter (whitelist/blacklist based, and
user-configurable, but any time the configuration was lost
for a user, it defaulted to impounding everything and
replying with an "enrollment-request" message) to
CommuniGate Pro. It's got a very rich, and very
user-configurable spam filter; I've managed to configure
my account so that there hasn't been a false positive in
weeks, and so that the more common "phishing" expeditions
get immediately forwarded to the authorities, and now at
least 90% of my spam gets stopped at the server. Oh, and
as soon as my ISP switched to CommuniGate, the progress
bar in Netscape 4.7's mail reader (on my Mac at home)
started working again for the first time in a couple of
years (I thought some resource in Netscape had gotten
stomped).
2. There's a very simple way for a legitimate user to send
email out of his home server from anywhere in the world.
It's called a web-mail interface, and most mail servers
these days have them. In fact, my ISP now has 2 separate
web-mail interfaces; I'm sending this out of the one
that's built into CommuniGate.
Please note that I am in no way connected with the makers
of CommuniGate. iMail (which is what we use here at
Touchtone) also has a rather nice web-mail interface built
into their server.
