I want to FTP some nightly backup save files from a V5R3 system to one running V4R5. They would not be restored to the V4R5 system, just be available there in the event that they need to be moved back to the V5R3 system for recovery purposes. Are there any version differences in the save files that I need to be aware of?

I've seen other responses to your question but most of them are simply rubbish.

You can FTP or SNADS a save file from any version of OS/400 to any other system (as long as you do a binary transfer). There is nothing special about a save file until it contains data thus CRTSAVF on any version of OS/400 creates the same kind of object. What determines whether a save file is usable on a given release is the SAVxxx command which sets various values indicating the format of the save file contents (note that: the CONTENTS, not the save file object itself).

So you can FTP save files from 530 back to 450 with impunity. You will not be able to restore from those save files **ON** 450 but you don't want to do that anyway. You will be able to FTP the save files from 450 back to 530 and restore their contents. The only proviso is that you have a working 530 system to which to send them.

Simon Coulter.
