Joe, Regarding rule 12: "Codd's 12th rule specified that an RDBMS should not be accessible in a way that subverts its constraints and integrity rules." Using traditional RPG on a file does not violate rule 12. If I use constraints, and referential integrity, RPG will NOT allow you to bypass the constraints and RI. True? If your testing shows otherwise, enlighten me. It just requires that you do a little more checking, and a little less ASSUMption when you do a WRITE or an UPDATE and the operation fails. Heck, I can't even violate these rules using UPDDTA, WRKDBF, etc. Rob Berendt -- Group Dekko Services, LLC Dept 01.073 PO Box 2000 Dock 108 6928N 400E Kendallville, IN 46755 http://www.dekko.com "Joe Pluta" <joepluta@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx 03/07/2005 07:32 PM Please respond to Midrange Systems Technical Discussion <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To "'Midrange Systems Technical Discussion'" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> cc Subject RE: Logical File or OPNQRYF or anyother way ? - Legacy iSeriesFlatFiles > From: Joe Pluta > 3, 5, 6 and 12 tend to > exclude every database one way or another. <sigh> Too much typing. Rule 5 is rarely a problem. Rule 3 simply sucks in RPG. Rules 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are the ones that cause problems. -- This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
