Good idea.
Reads it once to display it on the subfile.
Reads it again to show it on the detail screen.
And if you did an update, reads it again to do a "before/after" check 
instead of using record lock.
Just might be what happened.

Might compare also with UPDDTA, query/400, iSeries Navigator Run Sql 
Scripts, etc

Not to sound silly, is it possible DBU reads the row three times? Try
writing your own 10 line rpg program that reads the row, so you know
exactly what's happening.
