What about a low-end used computer? You don't need much power to run a 5250
session, all you need is an OS that will support IP (Win98) and the emulator
software. Uninstall solitaire, lock is down so that the user can't install
programs. I've got an old 60MHz Pentium running emulation in the warehouse
just fine.

Subject: Re: Ethernet to twinax adapter?

What are Perle 494 units going for on ebay?
Or IBM 5494's?
Or Net Stations?

But then you'd have to add in the education factor which can quickly jump
past the cost factor of:
$299 for
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_2400?c=us
&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
$79 to upgrade from Home to Professional $100 for a 17" CRT
$478 Total before taxes and shipping.

Subject
Ethernet to twinax adapter?

Hi,

I'm looking into placing a cheap twinax dumb terminal in several of our
warehouses, only one per warehouse. My entire network is IP over
Ethernet,
with T1s and frac-T1s running to the branches in multiple states. So,
I'll
need an "adapter" which will allow me to connect a twinax device to an
RJ45
ethernet jack. This terminal will serve only one purpose and the purpose
of
this solution is to be CHEAPer than putting a PC in the warehouse. If a
$50-100 terminal gets smashed by a forklift, oh well, just put in another
one. It's a different scenario if a forklift smashes a $1000 PC. Not to
even mention the setup/support and the "solitaire factor", which will be
completely avoided by a terminal.

I know that eTwinax or a controller would work, at about $1400 a pop. But,
this defeats the whole purpose, or at least the $$$ part of it...

Any suggestions?
