I don't know if it's related or not but this is my story of having a V5R3
upgrade using image catalogs hang...
Everything started out OK but when it tried to do the first IPL it hung and
displayed a SRC that indicated that it couldn't find the console. (I don't
remember what the actual SRC was). We checked cables and the console was
plugged into port 0. After a bit of confusion we discovered that the
address on the terminal itself was set to 6, not 0. We changed that and
were able to do a manual IPL to the A side. It appeared that the LIC was
installed but it hadn't done the OS yet. A call to IBM confirmed that we
were OK to continue with an automatic installation. It turned out that the
console was set a 6 because the original console was replaced about a year
ago and the setting was never updated. Nobody had noticed and until the
upgrade it didn't matter.
Granted, we were on a different release and didn't have multiple image
catalogs on our system. Once we got past that it was smooth sailing. We
are looking at upgrading our other system in a few months and will most
likely use the image catalog again.

I'm looking for someone who has had experience with upgrading from an
Image catalog. (I was doing a V5R2 - V5R3 upgrade.) The system was at
C4244520 with all of the required Image Catalog and upgrade PTF's (per
SupportLine.)
It appeared to me that having multiple image catalogs on the system
caused the LIC install to hang. I had the LIC and O/S in image catalog
UPGRADE05. I also had image catalogs CUMULATIVE and GROUPPTFS. The
command entered was: PWRDWNSYS OPTION(*IMMED) RESTART(*YES)
IPLSRC(*IMGCLG) IMGCLG(UPGRADE05)
After the LIC installs hung at srcC6004001 (three times) I would IPL and
find image catalog UPGRADE05 unloaded from OPTVRT01 and either
CUMULATIVE or GROUPPTFS loaded. After deleting image catalogs
CUMULATIVE and GROUPPTFS the LIC install completed successfully and
continued with the O/S install.
Is this a "normal" behavior?
