Both Firefox and IE are working well for me. I am on Win2K Pro SP4, IE 6 SP1, and FF 1.0. My Java info is

C:\Documents and Settings\vern>java -version
java version "1.4.1_04"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_04-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_04-b01, mixed mode)

I used to have multiple JREs - removed them all and finally got this one - newer ones cause problems for me.

I can answer the second one. WDSC includes its own JVM and will not be
impacted by your decision. Java 1.4.2_06 includes a fairly significant
security fix, so I would not remove it.

I would probably uninstall all 3, and then reinstall the most recent.
