I think this cannot be done directly. The stuff on the tapes has TWERP (tape write error protection) stuff - I don't know, checksums, maybe, etc. - that cannot just be copied to CD. One approach might be to restore the stuff off the tape, then use the premastering APIs and save back again to tape.

But let me present another idea - this involves SAVFs and V5R3

1. Restore the tapes to a system that can handle things.
2. SAVOBJ to SAVF on that system
3. Push the SAVFs to a V5R3 machine
4. Using an image catalog, create *NEW image entries in it of size *CD650 or *DVD4700 and initialize them.
5. SAVSAVFDTA the SAVFs just transferred to the loaded image entry
6. Pull the image file to your PC and burn, baby, burn.

There is no target release limitation on SAVSAVFDTA - at least I see no parameter for it.

The image files thus created are ISO-9660

How 'bout that, huh?

All,

We're looking at having old backup tapes (reel-to-reel and 8mm) converted from tape to CD/DVD.

Objects from the 400 were saved to the tapes using the SAVOBJ.

The local conversion shop we're working with sent us a test CD that doesn't seem to be in the right format.

Looking at some info online, it doesn't seem to be as simple as copying byte by byte from tape to CD. In particular, the requirement to use the qlpHandleCdState and qlpGenCdPremasteringInfo APIs prior to doing a backup.

Does this mean that you can't convert an old tape?

We'd like to work with this local vendor, but if anybody has contact info for vendors who can handle this request, that would be fine also.

Thanks,
